Temporary Gardener for The Botanical Garden at Lund University
The Botanical Garden (LUBT) is to be a center for knowledge of botany and horticulture based on scientific principles. The garden should be an attractive and accessible place for research, teaching, recreation, and inspiration. Extensive national and international work on plant conservation and biodiversity is also carried out here.
The Botanical Garden houses approximately 7,000 different plant species in open ground and in our greenhouses. With over half a million visitors every year, the garden is an important meeting place where high demands are placed on quality, safety, and experiential value.
About the Position
Our public greenhouses have recently undergone extensive renovation and are now entering an exciting development phase where new environments, plantings, and plant collections are being established. The position therefore offers a unique opportunity to be involved in the development of future greenhouse environments at The Botanical Garden.
We are now looking for a temporary gardener to replace an employee who is on leave.
Responsibilities
You will work with the daily maintenance of the greenhouse collections and be responsible for parts of the cultivation and plant material. A large part of the work during this period will involve establishing and building new greenhouse environments following the completed renovation.
The position involves varied work where practical plant care is combined with development work regarding cultivation environments, climate, and the establishment of plant material.
The duties include, among other things:
- Daily plant care and establishment of plant material
- Building and developing new greenhouse environments
- Work with various types of substrates and cultivation systems
- Irrigation, climate control, and simpler troubleshooting in greenhouse technology
- Maintenance of tropical and subtropical plants
- Documentation and administrative tasks related to cultivation and operations
- Practical problem-solving in daily operations
The work team includes a supervisor and another gardener.
You will be part of the workplace's weekend rotation, which means working approximately every 7th–8th weekend. The Botanical Garden is a relatively small workplace where we help each other across different parts of the operations as needed.
Qualifications
We are looking for you who have:
- At least a 2-year horticultural education with a focus on cultivation
- At least 1 year of experience working in a greenhouse environment with collection responsibility
- Good knowledge of greenhouse technology
- Experience in practical plant cultivation in greenhouse environments
- Knowledge of different substrates and cultivation environments
- Good teamwork and communication skills
- Ability to work in a structured and independent manner
- Experience with tropical and subtropical plant material
It is an advantage if you have:
- Experience working in larger greenhouse or cultivation facilities
- Specialized knowledge in botany, cultivation, or greenhouse environments
Personal Qualities
To succeed in the role, you need to be flexible, solution-oriented, and thrive in an operation where tasks vary between ongoing operations and development work. You need to be able to prioritize, take responsibility, and work both independently and together with others.
We are looking for an engaged person with a great interest in plants, cultivation, and the development of sustainable and attractive greenhouse environments.
The position is a temporary contract.
Personal suitability will be given great weight.
We kindly decline all contact from advertising sales, recruitment, and staffing agencies due to public procurement regulations.
